Paper #2 Intro

Social Interaction is apart of everyday life. In Second Life the whole idea is social interaction. Everywhere you go you talk to someone whether it be at a club, party, store or any kind of event. There is always some one to talk to. Talking is the number one way that people interact in real life. So it only makes since that its the same way in Second Life.

Introduction

Movies are a big part of American society. People see movies all the time. Movies help people escape their regular lives. They are made all sorts of ways. Documentaries capture people or events as they happen. Real action movies show actors playing roles of other people. Animation movies have the characters and places created by artists. Lastly there are movies that are made in virtual worlds using programs and games like halo, second life and the Sims. Making virtual movies is extremely challenging but also interesting. There is a lot that goes into the process of making machinima. Such as casting, directing, filming, advertising, and finding a place to show the film.

Let me introduce my second self

My character is named Murray Mnemonic. He wears a costume of a Star Wars Stormtrooper. I had him wear this because I am a big fan of the star wars trilogy. I am always looking for things that are star wars related in second life and I also have a costume. My real life costume is of the bounty hunter Boba Fett. I wear it on Halloween and I also sometimes get paid to wear it to some parties and events. My character also wears a police duty belt because I am studying criminal justice and I am pursuing a career in law enforcement. I chose the belt because it is part of a police uniform that is really noticeable and serves an important role in helping an officer perform police related duties. Lastly my character has a cigar in his mouth because I think it is funny and makes him not seem so serious. The cigar puffs smoke out every once and awhile. Underneath the costume the character has no face and his skin is dark black so the stormtrooper looks good. The shape came with the costume so I didn’t make that either.

Sometimes when I am not in the stormtrooper costume I put on a t-shirt of something I like maybe police related or gi Joe and sometimes even just to be funny. I usually wear camouflage pants because the military is really interesting to me. I am looking for a Boba Fett costume now but usually it costs money so I am going to have to wait on that. As you can see, by looking at my avatar you could learn a lot about me and the things I like. I stumbled upon most of it but I am always looking for more.

Adventure!!

Adventure is in the air! My fellow classmate Eric Mnemonic and I set out to explore SecondLife. The first stop on our journey was Info Island. Info Island is a place where you can learn about anything; cultures, astronomy, law, or even about resumes. They have books and displays. We arrived next to two very large video screens near the front of the main library. Next we started discussing finding a calendar and other things that we should do using voice. Someone overheard us and showed us to the reference desk where we could learn about the area and what Info Island has to offer. We looked at the scheduled events, there is always a lot going on. On Saturday January 31 there is a tech exhibit. That sounds like something I might attend because I like technology. We walked through the library and looked at the law area. Being criminal justice majors we started reading around and there was a lot of good information. We saw pictures of our new president and we also saw a place where you can play some drums. It was fun to see the culture areas. They have a miniature Paris and Mexico. We spent some time in the Native American area. We even did a rain dance! Next I traveled to Marni. It is a home and an area with lots of interesting things to look at. I found what looks like an alien piloting a space ship. There is a lot to do and interact with. I looked around some more and saw some pretty neat things. After that I headed over to apocalypse which is a role playing sim. It is an urban slum. Looking around you see graffiti and rundown buildings. The role playing has a group that acts like a wolf pack. The avatars that I saw had tails and hair that looks like a lions mane. While I was there I saw job applications for police officers. I picked one up and I plan on filling it out. It is an interesting place. I will come back again and learn more about it.
